On Wednesday, Donald Trump became the third president in United States history to be impeached. Voting nearly along party lines, the House approved two articles of impeachment: abuse of power and obstructing Congress.
Only two Democrats opposed the article on abuse of power, and only three Democrats opposed the article on obstruction of Congress.
After Impeachment, President’s Fate Lies With the Senate
But now, the president’s fate lies with the Senate, which will hold a trial on whether to remove the president from office. That trial is set to begin early next year, only 10 months before Trump faces re-election.
The Senate will have the final say on whether to acquit the president–or convict and remove him from office. The Senate is Republican-controlled, so acquittal might be likely. However, the impeachment has already put a permanent stain on Trump’s presidency.
Do you believe that the Republican-controlled chamber will acquit Trump, or do you think that they will remove him from office?
